Kosen Smart Bulb

How does the Kosen Smart Bulb work?

Smart light bulbs use wireless technologies to connect to your smartphone and allow you to control the bulb from an app. The Kosen Smart Bulb uses Wi-Fi while other smart bulbs may use other wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Zigbee.

What does E27 or B22 mean?

E27 and B22 refer to the base type of a light bulb. Check your lamp's specifications to determine which base type you need. You don't want to get this wrong! 

The "E" in E27 refers to the Edison screw base while the "27" means that the base diameter is 27mm. The E27 is a screw in fit. This base is the most common in Australia. 

B22 denotes a "Bayonet" base with 22mm diameter, which is a simple push and twist to fit.

Currently we do not offer E14 smart bulbs.

What does 1100 lumens mean?

A lumen is the amount of light a bulb gives off. More lumens means brighter light, while fewer lumens means dimmer light. A typical smart bulb produces 800 lumens, but the Kosen Smart Bulb produces 1100 lumens, which is around 40% brighter.

What does 10W mean?

This refers to the wattage of the bulb, which is the amount of energy it uses over time (technically speaking, it is a unit of power equal to 1 joule per second). When incandescent light bulbs dominated the market, the higher the wattage, the brighter the bulb would be. However, this is no longer the case with LED bulbs, as they have become more energy efficient. So when you are shopping for light bulbs, think lumens not watts.

The Kosen Smart Bulb produces up to 1,100 lumens, which is equivalent in brightness to a 75W traditional incandescent light bulb.

How much energy does the Kosen Smart Bulb use? 

The wattage of a light bulb tells you how much energy it uses per hour. From this, you multiply the wattage by the number of hours you are using the light bulb to determine the amount of energy used.

For example, the Kosen Smart Bulb is 10W, and if you use it for 100 hours, then the amount of energy consumed would be 10W x 100 hours = 1,000 Wh or 1kWh (kilowatt-hour).

Assuming you use the Kosen Smart Bulb for 5 hours a day for a year, and the electricity price is $0.25 per kWh, then the annual cost of the Kosen Smart Bulb is $4.56 - less than $5 a year!

Where is the Kosen Smart Bulb made?

Our company is incorporated in Australia. Production takes place in China, where we are able to work closely with our supplier to bring you the highest quality products at an affordable price. 

Is there a warranty?

All Kosen Smart Bulbs come with a 2 year warranty.

Setting up

How do I setup the Kosen Smart Bulb?

1. Download and install the app. Search for "Smart Life" in Google Play or the App Store. Alternatively, click or scan the QR code below.

Sign up for a new account.

2. Install the Kosen Smart Bulb into lamp socket and power it on. 

3. Pair the Kosen Smart Bulb.

  • The bulb will start to blink when it is lit for the first time. Ensure the light bulb is rapidly blinking. If not, turn the switch on and off 5 times.
  • Click "Add Device" or "+" and choose "Add manually"
  • Click "Lighting (BLE+Wi-Fi)".
  • Select the Wi-Fi which your phone is connected to. Please use a 2.4GHz connection.
  • Enter Wi-Fi password and confirm the connection.
  • Rename the bulb as you wish.

Do I need a bridge or a hub? 

No. Because the Kosen Smart Bulb uses Wi-Fi, it does not need a hub or bridge to be used.

How do I connect the Smart Life app to Google Assistant?

  • Click "+" on the menu of the Google Home app home page, then click "Set up device". Select "Works with Google".
  • Find "Smart Life" in the list. If there is a prompt to login, then input your Smart Life email and password. (Note: You can add your email in the phone number bar.)

You can now control the Kosen Smart Bulb through Google Home! You can add the light to a specific room (e.g. your bedroom) and use voice commands such as:

  • "Hey Google, turn on the bedroom light"
  • "Hey Google, set the bedroom light to 50%"
  • "Hey Google, brighten the bedroom light"
  • "Hey Google, dim the bedroom light"
  • "Hey Google, set the bedroom light to red"

Note: You cannot connect the Kosen Smart Bulb directly to the Google Home app. It can only be done through the Smart Life integration.

How do I connect the Smart Life app to Alexa?

  • Click "Skills & Games" on the menu and search for "Smart Life". Select "Smart Life" and click to "Enable" the Smart Life skill.
  • When redirected to the account link page, input your Smart Life account and password. Click "Link now"(Note: You can add your email in the phone number bar.)
  • Discover devices: Echo needs to discover your smart devices before controlling them. You can say "Alexa, discover devices" to Echo, or you can also click "Add Devices" to find smart devices.

You can now control the Kosen Smart Bulb through Alexa! You can add the light to a specific room (e.g. your bedroom) and use voice commands such as:

  • "Alexa, turn on the bedroom light"
  • "Alexa, set the bedroom light to 50%"
  • "Alexa, brighten the bedroom light"
  • "Alexa, dim the bedroom light"
  • "Alexa, set the bedroom light to red"

Is the Kosen Smart Bulb compatible with IFTTT?

Unfortunately, the Kosen Smart Bulb is not currently compatible with IFTTT. Sorry!

Does the Kosen Smart Bulb integrate with Apple HomeKit?

Unfortunately, the Kosen Smart Bulb is not currently compatible with Apple HomeKit. Sorry!

Using the Kosen Smart Bulb and the app

How do I change the colour of the Kosen Smart Bulb?

  1. Open the Smart Life app.
  2. Select the Kosen Smart Bulb.
  3. Click "White" to control the temperature of the white, or click "Color" to choose a RGB colour.

Alternatively, you can control the colour of the lights through Google Home or Amazon Alexa, either through the app or using voice.

How do I schedule the lights to turn on and off at a specific time?

  1. Open the Smart Life app.
  2. Select the Kosen Smart Bulb.
  3. Select "More" and "Schedule". Select "Add" to add a new schedule.
  4. Select the time, when it should repeat, and whether you wish to turn the light on or off. Press "Save". You may also add a note and select whether you wish to receive a notification.

How do I schedule the lights to turn on and off at sunrise or sunset?

The way we do this is by creating an automation which is triggered by a condition, using "If then" logic. 

  1. Open the Smart Life app and select "Scene".
  2. In the same screen, press "+" to create a new scene. 
  3. Select "When weather changes" and then "Sunset/Sunrise"
  4. Choose a city and specify whether you wish the action to be triggered at sunrise or sunset. You can specify an amount of time before or after sunrise/sunset (e.g. 10 minutes before sunset). Once finished, press "Next". You will now see the trigger condition under the "If" section.
  5. Select the "+" next to "Then" and select "Run the device".
  6. Select the Kosen Smart Bulb and click "ON/OFF". Select whether you wish to turn the bulb on or off. You may also select other specifications such as Mode, Brightness, Colour Temperature or Timer. Once finished, press "Next". Repeat this if you wish to use this on multiple smart bulbs.
  7. Press "Save". The automation should now appear on your list of automations. 

Pro tip: If you wish to trigger more complicated actions with multiple devices (e.g. turn on smart lights and close smart blinds), then it is recommended that you setup a "Tap-to-Run". Then, when setting up the automation, you can choose the Tap-to-Run as the action which is triggered (under "Then").

How do I sync the lights with music?

  1. Open the Smart Life app.
  2. Select the Kosen Smart Bulb.
  3. Select "Music"

The lights will now change colour based on the music it hears from the microphone in your smartphone.

Shipping and returns

How much does shipping cost and how long does it take? 

Standard shipping (2-10 business days) is free for orders above $50, and otherwise the shipping rate is $10. Express shipping (1-4 business days) is $15. See our Shipping Policy for more details. 

How does the 14-day free returns and exchanges work?

Please email support@kosen.io and we will provide you with a return shipping label and all the instructions you need.

Can I cancel or change my order?

Yes, as long as the order hasn't been shipped yet. Please email support@kosen.io as soon as possible with "Urgent order cancellation" in the subject. Otherwise, please allow for your package to be delivered and leave it unopened so we can provide you with a returns label.

What if I put the wrong shipping address?

If the order hasn't been shipped yet, then please send an email to support@kosen.io with "Urgent order cancellation" in the subject. We will make the changes and work with you and the courier to redirect the package where possible.

My package went missing. What should I do?
